Event Brief

This 3-day course on Airworthiness Certification Criteria specifically addresses the explanation and application of MIL-HDBK-516C to military aircraft, and civil aircraft used in military service. The course will address both fixed wing and rotary wing requirements and provide a detailed overview of MIL-HDBK 516C to Uninhabited Air Vehicles (UAVs). Military aircraft have a level of complexity that require assessment of the survivability in combat operations. This thus requires a different approach to the airworthiness certification of military aircraft with respect to civil aircraft.

Initially airworthiness requirements are reviewed and the airframe and systems for military aircraft is summarised, and is also put into context of the certification criteria. An overview of the content of MIL-HDBK-516C is provided and the respective changes to revision C from revisions B and A, and the baseline documents are highlighted. The importance of flight safety is also discussed. Then detailed comments on the explanation and application of airworthiness certification criteria to airframe (including aging airframes), propulsion system, mechanical systems, avionic and electrical systems, cockpit and safety systems, weapons and special military systems are provided. Finally, the impact of civil airworthiness requirements on military operated civil certified aircraft is introduced.
